Positron Annihilation at Dislocations and Related Point Defects in Semiconductors

Dislocations act in semiconductors as combined positron traps, consisting of a shallow precursor state, which is related to regular parts of the dislocation line, and bound vacancy-like defects. The motion of dislocations during plastic deformation generates a high number of point defects. The clustering of vacancies to stable voids is regarded as a primary process of the jog dragging mechanism...

Multiscale modeling of dislocation-precipitate interactions in Fe: From molecular dynamics to discrete dislocations.

The stress-driven motion of dislocations in crystalline solids, and thus the ensuing plastic deformation process, is greatly influenced by the presence or absence of various pointlike defects such as precipitates or solute atoms. These defects act as obstacles for dislocation motion and hence affect the mechanical properties of the material. Here we combine molecular dynamics studies with three...

The dynamical complexity of work-hardening: a large-scale molecular dynamics simulation

We analyze a large-scale molecular dynamics simulation of work hardening in a model system of a ductile solid. With tensile loading, we observe emission of thousands of dislocations from two sharp cracks. The dislocations interact in a complex way, revealing three fundamental mechanisms of work-hardening in this ductile material. These are (1) dislocation cutting processes, jog formation and ge...

Unified Theory of Dislocation Damping with a Special Reference to Point-defect Dragging

The complete mathematical solution of dislocation dampinq for the equally spaced multi-dragging-point-defect case is investigated by the Laplacetransformation method combined with a variational procedure. Jt is shown that the dragging leads to an expression which is identical to the exact solution of the Koehler-Granato-Liicke (KGL) model with a modified damping constant. The apparent dissimila...

Dislocation Kink Dynamics in Crystals with Deep Peierls Potential Relief

Processes of the nucleation and motion of kinks, determining the dislocation mobilities in crystals with high Peierls barriers, are reviewed. Various mechanisms of an influence of point defects on the kink dynamics are analyzed. To demonstrate these mechanisms experimental data are presented obtained with two-level intermittent loading of Si, Ge, and bulk SiGe alloy single crystals. The instabi...
